…but we all know whose mother she is by now. I won’t repost it because it horrified me, but a woman wrote a blog post about her son in which she told the world that he is a future mass murderer, complete with his real name and a photo. It went viral with cheers and accolades for her honesty and courage.
Very few people considered it from her child’s point of view. Here’s an excellent response from someone who did:
When your child is part of an already stigmatized minority, whether he is autistic or mentally ill or non-white, it is terrifying to see him lumped in with a category of people (mass murderers) who are feared and hated. That is always true, but to see a child outed that way during a time when emotions are running high among the general public is utterly horrific. People abuse and even kill other people out of fear every day. This boy still has to go to school, where teachers and other kids will have read his mother’s words. Imagine being labeled a future mass murderer and then having to go out in public.
I can relate to this mother’s words more than I will ever write about online. And for the record, I have Nick’s, and Karla’s for that matter, permission to write everything I say on this blog. But today I want to hide and protect them both, given the speculation about whether the Newtown killer was autistic. I truly hope that this boy does not become a victim of someone trying to prevent the next mass murder.
